New Eddys

After a brief delay we've had some shiny new Merckx in to complete the lineup.

The award winning AMX-1 alloy bike at a more accessible £999 price point is in, as is the stunning EMX-3 Centaur at £2199 with Fulcrum racing wheels and campag Centaur carbon groupset.

Below is the new EMX-1 peleton.  Now, this frameset doesn't have the internal cable routing of the EMX-3 but it has the same CL+ full carbon layup, carbon fork, Shimano 105 shifting, Shimano wheels and FSA/Prologo finishing kit, and it's £1599 (I know, we cant quite believe it either)

We now have an EMX Test Bike available that you can book to ride too

Time for Time

There are certain companies that just have to forge their own path in pursuit of excellence.  Time is one of them.  Time produce boutique carbon fibre framesets in France using a very very controlled carbon process. Time weave their own carbon fibres and form them around wax moulds allowing better control of layup, wall thicknesses and voids.  There is no carbon fibre bike that rides quite like a Time.

The model below is the Fluidity S 'Black Label'; a bike described by Cycling Plus Magazine as: "The best sportive frame on the market" - http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/road/product/review-time-vrs-fluidity-12-45799

Pashleys are just nice

A lot has happened in such a small space of time, so much so that we haven't really had time to get stuff updated so there are a lot of updates coming at once!

First off, We've had our first delivery of Pashley.  Pashley are synonymous with British quality, having been handbuilt in Stratford-upon-Avon since 1926. www.pashley.co.uk

6 months in, what's going on?

As some of you might be aware we've really neglected the blog recently and we've found Facebook ( www.facebook.com/KineticCyclesWelwyn ) and Twitter ( @kineticbicycles ) an easier medium to quickly keep people up-to-date as oppsoed to long, rambling blog posts.

But enough of that....

So, it's a week shy of 6 months since we opened the doors and a lot has changed.  The stress and chaos of preparing a shop to open have been replace with the stress and chaos of a business that has grown far quicker than any of us anticipated.  We have had a fully booked workshop since the 2nd month and we've doubled our staff.  We've gone from an initial portfolio of 4 brands to a burgeoning portfolio that now includes Specialized, Ridgeback, Genesis, Pashley, Moda, Mondraker, Eddy Merckx, Yeti, Singular and Time, alongside clothing from Endura, Fox Racing and Pearl Izumi and quality accessories from the likes of GoPro, Brooks, Camelbak, Evoc to name but a very, very few.  And that's not to forget the BMX and scooter boys too!

So what's next?  Well, after a summer that lasted for about a fortnight we've got our first christmas to look forward to.  Alongside the traditional christmas trade, we're also going to be promoting a range of awesome stocking fillers, a christmas idea gift list and Emma is going to be putting together a cycling twist on the traditional Christmas Hamper.

On a non-festive note, we've got a swanky new website being built by our friends at www.lemongrassmedia.co.uk which will be going live in early October.  This will have a groovy news feed as well as info on us, our brands and an online booking system for the workshop.

As much of a cliche as it is, by liking us on facebook it provides an easier access point for information on what we've got going on, events and rides we will be holding and a viewpoint into the murky world of running a bike shop. - www.facebook.com/KineticCyclesWelwyn or Twitter @KineticBicycles

Spring Cleaning (pics, pics and more pics)

Well, despite the weather we've been run off our feet!  However, we've made time in our busy schedule to get the shop in order.  We're still adding brands and as such it'll constantly be evolving over time.

You can check out how things are looking at the moment on our facebook page http://on.fb.me/Jo277p

New Brands Ahoy

For anyone who has been a regular reader of the blog, you may well have noticed that we've been a bit slack on putting up posts over the last few days.  Well, it's not slackness, it's just the fact that we've been run off our feet all day every day.  However we've found some time in our days to take on some new brands.  We're pleased to announce that we've added Mondraker bikes to our portfolio of Mountain Bikes; Mondraker are one of the continent's biggest brands and are developing a real following in the UK with their range of performance suspension bikes including the World Cup winning Summum and gravity-enduro winning Dune.  The full range is available to view online at www.mondraker.com  A range of bikes should be in stock with us this week and we are also planning on building a very special Foxy (140mm travel) demo bike.

Alongside Mondraker we'd also like to point our that we are also stockists on RaceFace - Canadian component specialists, E.Thirteen - Innovative chainguides, wheels, cranks and more! and Evoc - Sophisticated Luggage.

All will be instore soon so keep checking back for updates.

New Website

Some of you may have noted that our previous website was terrible, worse than terrible, non-existent.  Now, however, it's slightly less terrible.  I've almost certainly coded something incredibly badly somewhere along the line and we will of course keep adding to it as the days progress.

Happy trails, hope the rain doesn't dampen too many people's spirits, summer is almost here, I promise!

All the colours - Lovely Fox Clobber

The heavy downpours of the last 48 hours can tell us two things:

Firstly Veolia Water's rain dance is clearly working and more importantly; Summer is almost here!

What better way to cheer one's self up than with some lovely spring/summer clothing?

We've just taken delivery of even more clothing from those lovely people at Fox.  It's not just the usual raft of technical riding clothing, oh no! We've been asked by a number of people if we're going to be offering any casual clothing, so we have obliged.

In addition to Riding Jerseys, Gloves and Shorts, this week we've had a raft of tees, hoodies, shorts and accessories arrive for both men and ladies.  A small selection of which you can see below.

Pop in and take a look, we're sure you won't be disappointed.

So, We're Open!

What a manic weekend.  Although we weren't technically going to open until next weekend we thought, as we had so much done, we'd open our doors a week early to gauge some public response, which was brilliant! Thanks for all the positive comments we have received it really does make a huge difference.  We're still learning our till system and as our PDQ machine still hasn't arrived (this should be rectified by the time you read this) there were a few gremlins we have ironed out.  The shop is looking a tad bare in places but we have more bikes, clothing and P&A arriving on a daily basis.

We're already taking workshop bookings, so if you have a need for servicing, please get in touch.

Our opening times are as follows:

Monday - Closed
Tuesday - 9am - 6pm
Wednesday - 9am - 6pm
Thursday - 9am - 8pm
Friday - 9am - 6pm

Wednesday 28 March 2012

We're opening Saturday

We've had a couple of mails asking how things are progressing, and the answer is, thick and fast!

We've slapped a lot of white paint on the walls, put up some shiny racking and laid a lawn! (all will become clear).  Aside from all of this, we've got bikes due in tomorrow, 60 of the buggers! which (mostly) need building for saturday; fun and games.

I'm sure we'll get a chance to pop some photos up tomorrow, but in the meantime, put Saturday 31st March in your diaries as that's when we're open, by hook or by crook.

Tuesday 20 March 2012

A work in progress, quite a lot of progress (picture heavy)

We've not updated this for a few days, not that we have been avoiding it, we've just been unbelievably busy.  We've gone from a bare shell to something resembling a shop in a matter of days.  A few finishing touches and a hell of a lot of paint still to go, mind! and I'm sure things will become a lot more evident in the coming days as we finish things off and start to get some stock in.

I'm sure of you scroll through these quick enough it will be like a flick book!

As Promised

Earlier we mentioned we might have some news regarding brands we'll be stocking and, well, we do! Kinetic is proud to announce that alongside Specialized, we will be stocking Ridgeback and Genesis bikes, Singular frames and Fox clothing. We're quite happy about this as it goes.

We're going to be in the shop from 7am tomorrow to start the fit proper, so long days coming up. Remember to check back as we will update this as the days progress

Deliveries to Site

Unfortunately not the exciting bike based deliveries yet but the shop is starting to resemble a builders yard with piles of timber dotted around.  As you can see from the image below we've started to get the counter in place.  That counter is over 4 metres long just to give you an idea of the space we have available, the pictures really don't do it justice at all.  We're got the chippies in for tomorrow and thursday so it should start to resemble a shop pretty damned soon.

Stay tuned for some exciting news later today regarding more additions to our brand portfolio.

.....next....

It's been a really busy last few days for us. The big news is that we've signed our lease now, we're committed and there is no turning back! but furthermore we don't have to keep taking the keys back to the agent at the end of each day!

Do we have any real updates? Well other than its going to be a busy week for us, I'm not sure we do. We've got the shop fitters in Thursday/Friday so we should start looking like a bike shop by this time next week. Fingers crossed anyhow.

Tuesday 6 March 2012

The Blank Canvas - We are in!

Although we're waiting to sign on the dotted line, our landlord has kindly let us grab the keys a couple of days early so we can get cracking.  Ever wondered what a 1600 sq ft shell looks like?

We're going to be spending the next couple of weeks turning this space into the most exciting Cycle shop in the area.

We are Specialized

Is Spring Springing?

Looking out of my window I see a strange sight, the sun.  not only that, but on venturing outside I notice a dramatic side-effect of this seldom seen phenomenon; warmth!  Far too often over the past months the sight of the sun has been tainted with blistering cold meaning for the most part, it was often best enjoyed from behind glass, cuppa in had, sat in front of the fire.

Venturing further afield I notice the trails are drying, perhaps my laziness in leaving semi-slick tyres on my 'cross bike throughout the winter is about to pay dividends?!  The sun, warmth, dry trails and longer evenings can only be one thing; the masses are coming, and I do not at all mean this in a derisory fashion, I'm genuinely excited about the prospect.  Every spring time bikes are pulled from hibernation and once again the nation re-discovers it's love for all things 2-wheeled, which can only be positive.  Year-on-year  more people than ever, rather than consign their bikes to sheds and garages alongside their classic 2-seater sports cars and lawn mowers, sling on a set of waterproofs and mudguards and continue spinning away long into the winter.  And now comes the time to convert some more.  I'm sure with the Olympic buzz we'll see a new influx of people re-discovering the bike and another group who will be able to hold their head up high and rather than saying "I own a bike" will declare; "I am a cyclist!"  Can we keep this rolling is the question?

Anyway, onto more pressing matters:  We're still hounding solicitors to get on with the job in hand.  On the surface it doesn't appear complicated but it's taking it's sweet time.  On the up side, the landlord has very kindly agreed for us to have the keys in advance of completing so we can start getting contractors in. This should all be happening next tuesday and with that in mind, we should still be on schedule for an April opening - I have however watched enough episodes of Grand Designs to know not to count my chickens before they've hatched and relevant cliches.

We've got supplier meetings monday, so fingers crossed we should be able to announce some exciting (certainly for us) news soon.

Tuesday 28 February 2012

Time keeps on ticking

When we first started out on this journey back in October last year, April seemed a long way away.  We had plenty of time to find the right premises, source suppliers, get hold of all the investment we would need, fit the shop and throw open the doors, perhaps we could even do it earlier?

It's funny how all of a sudden we're looking at 5 weeks until we want to be open. 5 weeks, not 7 months, and still the lease is with the solicitors.  Having said that, in that time we have missed out on 2 shops and ultimately ended up with a bigger space in a better location and for less money than we had initially budgeted for, so perhaps fate has played it's part after all.

We've certainly not been twiddling our thumbs however; we've got bike suppliers lined up and provisional orders in, we've got some marketing materials prepped and we've had all the quotes we need for securing the shop and carrying out the fit in the way we would like, lets just hope we get the keys soon.

Tuesday 21 February 2012

With baited breath

So, the lease terms are still with the solicitor, waiting for the too-ing and fro-ing to end and to finally sign on the dotted line, get our keys and get on with our fit out. We've got orders in and most of our brands sorted (which we will be announcing next week all being well) so it literally is just a case of sitting tight and waiting...still waiting.....

Finally, after certain nameless service providers not being able to provide a service, we have a little holding page up whilst we finish the building process on the main site.  You'll be able to keep in touch through the site, twitter, Facebook or various other means.

snow and webpages

Firstly, it snowed last night, again!  Just when the compacted inch thick ice sheet coating the roads and trails in the area was starting to thaw, old mother nature pops up and drops a fresh load.  Snow is like a poor summer holiday; you look forward to it all year, but once you get there and see the terrible hotel you just spend two weeks waiting to go home!  Still is quite fun though!

Secondly, we've finally got a placeholder ready for the website.  We'll be updating it as news appears, much like here, Twitter (@kineticbicycles) and Facebook, so make sure you keep in touch.

htmhell

After finally getting to grips with photoshop and trying desperately to convince myself I might have a creative streak buried deep inside, I finally drew enough courage to launch Dreamweaver and attempt to create a holding page until brands are confirmed and the full webpage construction could begin.  After many an hour of banging my head against the proverbial brick wall I finally feel like we're getting somewhere.  I'm sure the more experienced would look at the code and recoil in terror at the hap-hazard nature of the page's creation but here it is for all to see.

On the shop side of things.  We're pretty much ready to go, the shop details are being agreed and now begins the wait for the keys, oh such magical keys!  Between then and now we should be in a position to divulge a bit more information on brands, stock and best of all, the opening party.  Keep in touch through Twitter @KineticBicycles or by e-mailing us at shop@kineticcycles.co.uk and we can keep you abreast of all developments.
